The OBSL needs
your skating stories.
We want to hear from you.
I need some stories to post. So If you have a funny story, a
memory
about a skater, or even a particular race that you will never forget
email me and I will post it to the OBSL website.
I
was looking at the National Inline Speed Skating Records and noticed
that there are no Ohio skaters holding indoor records. I want to
encourage everyone to start training hard and let's put some Ohio names
in front of those records.

My Race
By Shawn Hendrickson
The
year was 1994, yes I know a lot of you weren't even born yet. LOL. It
was my second year skating and I made it to Nationals on quads. You
know, the other kind of roller skates. I made it to my Sophomore Man
1500 semi-final, only three of us were going to make it to the final.
The gun blew and we were off. I was in second off the start and just
past the finish line the guy in first fell. I jumped over him. I didn't
make it. I fell and rolled a few times. I race back to my feet and by
the time I got back around to finish my first lap I was in 5th and the
top four were only a corner from lapping me. I saw the ref out of the
corner of my eye about to blow me over. So I took off into a dead
sprint.
Seven laps to go and the pack had dropped 4th place. I was
still
half a lap behind the leaders. Still sprinting I caught 4th place and
past him. Now with 5 laps to go it was time to catch the
leaders.
By this time I could hear the whole crown down in Lincoln cheering for
me. That kept me going. I continued to sprint as hard as I could. One
lap to go I was still a corner behind. I gave it everything I had.
As I was about spent I continued. I flew around the first corner, then
the second, still making up ground on the top three. The back straight
away came and went. I ripped around the last corner. There they were
only 10 feet in front of me as we crossed the finish line. That right,
I didn't make it to the final in that race, but the three skaters that
did, went on to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the final.
This race has always remained a strong memory in my head. I always get
fired up when I tell it. This is the type of memory that keeps us going
and make us love this sport. So here I am 13 years later
still
skating, no I'm not setting any records, YET. But I see a
drive
in all the skaters in our league that I have not seen since I started
skating in Ohio. So I'm looking forward to watching the Ohio Buckeye
League skaters set the standard for inline racing in the next few years.
I want to post more stories to
our website so please email them to me.
