What is the difference between long and short track speed skating?

A few months ago the Winter Olympics were televised on NBC. We really enjoyed watching the speed skating competitions. There was one thing that I couldn't tell the difference that pertained to the rules of speed skating. What is the difference between short and long track speed skating?
